Karastan Belleluxe Flooring with a grey area rug in a stylish bedroom

One of the easiest ways to elevate a bedroom without a full renovation is by adding a well-placed area rug. Whether you're placing it under the bed, or layering it over existing flooring, the right rug makes a real difference.

At The Carpet Store, we've been helping homeowners across the San Fernando Valley and Santa Clarita Valley find the right flooring and finishing touches since 1979. If you have questions about rugs, flooring, or anything in between, we're always happy to help. Stop by our showroom on Foothill Blvd in Sylmar or give us a call.

Picking the Right Rug Size for Your Bedroom

Before anything else, you need to get the rug size right.

A rug that's too small looks awkward and out of place, while one that's too large can overwhelm the room. Here's a simple way to think about it:

  • Queen or king bed: A 9' x 12' rug is the most popular choice. It gives you plenty of room on both sides and at the foot of the bed, so your feet always land somewhere soft.
  • Full or twin bed: An 8' x 10' rug works well. It still gives you that soft landing without taking over the whole room.
  • Smaller rooms or single beds: A 5' x 8' rug positioned at the foot of the bed can add warmth without crowding the space.

One thing we always tell customers: before you buy, tape out the dimensions on your floor with painter's tape. It takes five minutes and saves a lot of second-guessing.

How to Style a Rug Under a Bed

The most common approach is to slide the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed, leaving roughly 18 to 24 inches extending past either side and about 18 inches at the foot. This gives you that soft step when you get out of bed in the morning, which is a small luxury that makes a big difference day after day.

Center the rug under the bed, not under the furniture arrangement. The bed should be the anchor.

The rug's color and pattern do a lot of the heavy lifting in a bedroom. If your walls and bedding are neutral, this is your chance to bring in some personality with a bolder pattern or a warmer tone. If your room already has a lot going on visually, a more subdued, textural rug will keep things grounded.

Neutral tones like warm grays, soft creams, and earthy taupes are popular choices because they work with almost any style. Deeper tones like navy or forest green add a cozy, sophisticated feel that works well in the evenings.

If you're not sure where to start, our team at the showroom can help you think through what will work with your existing carpet or hardwood flooring.

Layering a Rug Over Carpet

Yes, you can put a rug on top of carpet, and when it's done right it looks great. It's a popular trick for adding a defined zone in a larger bedroom or for refreshing a space without replacing the flooring underneath.

Use a Rug Pad

This one is non-negotiable. A rug pad keeps the top rug from shifting around and adds a little extra cushion underfoot. Make sure you choose a pad designed specifically for use over carpet since standard pads are made for hard floors.

Go for Contrast

The key to layering rugs over carpet is contrast. If your carpet is a low-pile neutral (which is common in a lot of San Fernando Valley homes), try a flat-weave or textured rug on top that adds visual interest without being too heavy. If your carpet has more texture, a flatter rug on top will help keep the layers from looking too busy.

If you're thinking about upgrading the carpet underneath altogether, take a look at our carpet options or check out our laminate flooring and luxury vinyl flooring if you're considering a switch to hard flooring.

Size Still Matters When Layering

Even over carpet, the rug should be large enough to define the space. An 8' x 10' rug is usually the sweet spot for most bedrooms. Going smaller makes the layered look feel unintentional.

More Tips for Styling Bedroom Rugs

Here are a few more tips to help you style your bedroom rug like a pro:

Create a Focal Point

Use the rug to create a focal point in your bedroom. Place it under a statement piece of furniture, such as a chaise lounge or a stylish bench, to draw the eye and add visual interest.

Layer With Textiles

Complement the rug with other textiles, such as throws and cushions, to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Mix and match patterns and textures for an eclectic look or stick to a coordinated color palette for a more streamlined effect.

Consider the Room's Layout

Take the room's layout into account when placing your rug. Ensure the rug is positioned in a way that doesn't block pathways or obstruct the flow of the room. To make the most of small spaces, a set of runners might replace a single rug. Consider the placement of furniture and other decorative elements to create a harmonious and functional space.

What's Under the Rug Matters Too

A rug can do a lot, but the floor underneath it still matters. If you're dealing with older flooring that's scratched, outdated, or just not working with the look you're going for, it might be time to think about an upgrade.
